An Old and Stone Companion

The sun was below the tops of the trees and a slight breeze filled the early evening with the fragrance of late summer. It was pleasant enough and just the right temperature to bring a crowd of people into the park that day. There were lovers taking a long stroll hand in hand, children running around climbing trees and hopping across stones, and even a solitary officer nodding to passers by and keeping a close eye on the activity. This is particulary horrifying and really touching at the same time....it brings to mind all those poor souls who were incarcerated in "bedlam" which was the ancient insane assylum. I don't know if people ever came out of that place "cured" or even properly treated...but the title 'i was crazy once" makes me hopeful that she did come out on the other side whole.
Very thought provoking to me anyway....nice work

My grandmother was actually put into an asylum as she was schizophrenic, and the history of that particular establishment is horrifying. One of the most notorious ones in the country. It wasnt that long ago that they were still doing rather unorthodox treatments and severely mistreating the patients and as far as I know she was never "cured". Thankfully her soul is at peace now, but I very much hold the same sentiments when it comes to the "mentally ill" in that respect
